HYALURONIC ACID
One of the most important active ingredients in skin care is Hyaluronic Acid (HA), a clear, jelly-like substance found naturally in the body, including in the skin, eyes and joints. Its main task is to ensure that connective tissue and joints receive moisture and lubrication. Despite the name, hyaluronic acid is not an acid but a sugar called glycosaminoglycan. Almost 50% of the body's total HA content is found in the skin. It can bind water up to a thousand (!) times its own weight and is therefore an indispensable active ingredient in skin care for dehydrated skin and to prevent the skin from losing its fullness.
If hyaluronic acid is added to cleansing products, it can help the skin to become soft and clean without having a drying effect, such as COSRX Hydrium Triple Hyaluronic Moisturizing Cleanser and Isntree Hyaluronic Acid Low pH Cleansing Foam 150ml .
Age reduces the body's ability to maintain the production of HA and therefore needs help to maintain this. HA has a short life cycle in the skin. 30-50% of hyaluronic acid is broken down every day as part of the natural breakdown of HA in the skin. As we age, the production of HA decreases, but the levels of the enzyme hyaluronidase (the enzyme that breaks down HA) remain the same. Inflammation and sun damage also cause a decrease in HA levels in the skin. As mentioned, HA breaks down in the skin and is replaced, but as we age it is not replaced as quickly or completely. This leads to a lower ability to bind so much water (the important collagen and elastin fibers do not stay as moist and elastic without HA), which in turn leads to less fullness and firmness in the skin. Hyaluronic acid used incorrectly can also dehydrate your skin. The molecule needs water to bind moisture, but without moisture on the surface of your skin or from the air, it will draw water deep into your skin. For optimal effect, HA serum should be applied to damp skin and "lock" it quickly with a cream.

Hyaluronic acid does not penetrate skin cells; it settles in the epidermis between cells and mainly in the dermis where it works wonders. It regulates water transport and water content in the skin. Currently, there is no current HA product on the market that has the ability to penetrate the epidermis of the skin due to its molecular size. Hyaluronic acid comes in three different forms and sizes: full size, encapsulated and fragmented. Full-size and encapsulated forms of HA in this product help improve skin hydration by binding to water. Preliminary data suggest that the fragmented form (lower molecular weight HA) may have greater benefits for the skin. As the total HA content of the skin increases, an ideal environment is created for collagen to thrive.
